Carrefour Case Analysis

The purpose of this analysis is to highlight how Carrefour has financed its growth over the last four years i. e. 1968 through 1971 with the help of the Statement of Sources and Uses (Exhibit 1). In addition, the financing needs for the projected growth of the company will be reported and analyzed briefly. For this purpose Pro-forma Income Statements (Exhibit 2) and Pro-forma Balance Sheets (Exhibit 3) have been prepared for the next four years (1972 through 1975). From 1968 to 1971, Carrefour has used trade notes extensively as a source of cash. Other significant sources of funds are Other Current Liabilities, Accounts Payable, Shareholder's Equity and Long term debt. Most of the sources have been utilized to fund Building and also to generate more cash for the firm. A good portion of the sources have also been used to create more Inventories from 1968 to 1971. Land has been acquired during these four years as also other fixed assets and current assets. As is seen from the Pro-forma Balance Sheet, Carrefour would have to take significant amounts of Long Term Debt(at 10% Interest rate) in order to finance its expansion outside France. According to the projections, LT Debt would have to be increased to around 89% from 1971 to 1972 and 96% from 1972 to 1973 respectively. This means Carrefour would also have to pay huge amounts of interest on these debts. With revenue growth of 35% Carrefour would be able to support its debt and still earn fair amounts of profit including dividend payouts. However, huge amount of debt and interest expense might be risky and could lead to negative earnings if the actual revenue growth falls below the expected value of 35%. INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the Problem Mystical Rose School of Caloocan Inc. was founded by Dr. Marcelina Gregore in 1993. It is located at Ilang-Ilang Street, Almar Subdivision, Camarin, Caloocan City. Since the day the school has been founded they were using the manual library system, which give them hard time to record all the information. The library has this Accession Book where the incoming books and information about the books are recorded. The book records were done manually. Every time a student asks about a kind of book, the librarian finds it hard to locate, because she still needs to go through the list in the Accession Book. Although each book has a unique Accession Number still the librarian couldn’t manage to find it easily because the records of the books in the Accession Book are according to the date received. It takes more time for the librarian to find the record of each book. The librarian also encounter problems in encoding the books’ information because of disorganized records because information about the books is being unmonitored, in a way that some books are not yet listed on the Accession Book. And aside from the Accession Book they are also using the Card Catalog which serves as a guide in locating the books. There are huge amount of books in the library. It has different volumes, editions, authors, class, titles, subjects, years and publishers, and the accession number which set as a unique identity in every book in their library. It is very hard for the librarian to monitor all the books especially when it is encoded manually. 1.2 Overview of the Current State of Technology A student who will use the library must log in first to the attendance book before they enter the library. They have to fill up the information needed like date, student’s name, year & section, time in and out and their signature. If they will borrow books the librarian will record it to the log book. The people who can use the Library are the students, faculty and the Librarian. The Librarian is not required to go to the library every day. The librarian is on call. She has a schedule when to go to the school. When the librarian is not on schedule, the Aid takes the place on the work of the librarian. A student is allowed to borrow how many books they want when they are in the library. The student is also allowed to borrow two books with duration of two days. If the student failed to return the books within two days they are not allowed to borrow books the next time they borrow. And they are not allowed to bring it at home instead they could only borrow when they are inside the library. If the student lost the book, they must replace it with the same book. If the faculty will borrow books they could borrow books as much as they want, there is no limitation. The process of recording the student’s information was done manually by recording on a log book where every student who enters the library needs to fill up the information such as name, section, year level and the date. Same as the book records, the librarian needs to record the book title, author, book number according to its date received and the date to the Accession Book. The record of the books is not arranged properly because it was arranged according to its date received not alphabetically or by subject matter. The system takes a lot of time and endeavor to handle so the librarian must ensure to keep track the records in the library. 1.3 Project Rationale The following will benefit to the proposed System: * Mystical Rose School of Caloocan Inc. The school will be able to experience a Computerized Library System. It can monitor information and the books and records can be settled. The proposed system will record the list of all the books – plus the incoming books, in the library. It will record the students’ information who registered each day. Every time a student wants to borrow a book it will be inputted in the system and record it. It will help the librarian to manage the student’s record as well as the record and information’s of the books. * Student The student will no longer fill up all the information needed in the attendance book every time they enter the library. The transaction of a student will be faster in borrowing and returning of books. * The proponents The Computerized System is also designed for the benefits of the proponents for the compliance of the project in the subject System Analysis and Design and of course it widens their capabilities in creating their target program with the help of planning, researching, designing and developing. They will learn a lot not only in doing the system but also they will experience the real happening in the IT industry. It helps create a much more flexible database design and it can handle better database security. SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT LIFE CYCLE * This serves as guidelines to the proponents because it provides a sequence of activities for the system. A qualitative method focuses on collecting rich, non-statistical data. This method involves face-to-face interviews and actual participation with the group being researched. The Adlers use this method because it is almost impossible to gather accurate information on people who smuggle drugs. This is true because they are such private and deceitful people. The only way to get the real facts is if the smugglers trust the person. Unfortunately, participant observation brought problems such as the dealers and smugglers being under the influence or going through withdrawal during the interviews and the Adlers mixing their overt and covert roles. The Adlers chose participant observation because they found that using this method allowed them to acquire the most in-depth and rich data than any other method. If criminals like dealers and smugglers were given a survey, it would not work out because they are not just going to tell the truth and risk getting caught by the police. They are specific with who they give information to, so the Adlers had to show them that they could be trusted. They could not have done that with without using participant observation. Although there were many aspects about the Adlers that made them and the research method they used convenient, there were also some risks they had to take. While doing research, the Adlers encountered some problems using this method, one of which was interviewing the dealers and smugglers while they were under the influence of either marijuana or cocaine. In addition, the participants were sometimes withdrawal symptoms, so they were not able to interview properly. Patricia mentions how marijuana and cocaine had different effects on the interviewees. She states, â€Å"marijuana was unproductive for a number of reasons†¦ Often people became confused, sleepy, or involved in eating to varying degrees. ’ On the other hand, cocaine assisted the research procedure by making the dealers feel more comfortable. Cocaine also helped the dealers open up easily. During the interviews, some dealers experienced withdrawal symptoms. It caused them to become malicious with each other or towards the Alders without any warning. The way the Alders solved this problem was by taking precautions when interacting with the dealers. The cocaine use was not a problem for the Adlers, but they most likely dealt with the marijuana issue quite easily since Patricia does not specifically explain how it was solved. In addition, there was another problem the Adlers encountered. The Adlers also found that mixing the overt and covert roles with the members of the group throughout the investigation was another issue. Since the Adlers had different level relationships with every individual, some of the dealers were aware that they were a part of a research project while others were not aware. This sometimes confused the Adlers. Patricia states, â€Å"They [the informants] would made occasional veiled references in front of people, especially when loosened by intoxicants, that made us extremely uncomfortable. † This issue made the couple uncomfortable because they did not want to blow their cover. Patricia and Peter Adler also feared that the participants would think they are police. Peter and Patricia Adler solved this issue by take the necessary safety measures so anyone they did not want to find out. The Adlers encountered various problems while utilizing this qualitative method. They had troubles such as mixing their covert and overt roles and dealing with some of the smugglers and dealers being intoxicated. Therefore this investigation became very risky, but Patricia and her husband finalized by collecting all the data needed. A computer-controlled camera rig called the Dykstraflex which allowed detailed repetition of camera motion; it greatly facilitated travelling-matte compositing and creation. Film images were degraded during composition which was greatly minimized by other innovations. The widescreen images or scenes were photographed horizontally using far more films per frame along stock; by Dykstraflex using Vista Vision cameras, and for the composition process thinner-emulsion film stocks were used.
